For most of our marriage, every year around Christmas, a package would arrive with homemade TAMALES from Robert's mother. About two years ago, they stopped coming, but Robert still wanted his Christmas tamales. So, off we'd go to buy tamales that someone had already made.
This year, I decided to make the tamales myself for Robert. Jodie and Rachel May shared their technique with me. Rachel May even shared a website with PICTURES, which were very helpful because I have never seen anyone making tamales in person. Even so, everything went very smoothly until it came to the assembly. Since I had no previous experience, my frustration was growing because 1.) it was slow going for me 2.) I knew if I had someone there who knew what they were doing I could get some pointers. WAS I DOING IT CORRECTLY?!
Olivia was a big help because of her enthusiastic attitude. She thought it was the greatest thing to make daddy tamales. She felt no pressure to get it "right" or "perfect". Her attitude rubbed off on me, and I was able to calm down, realizing memories were being made for her....positive ones, as long as I relaxed.
All eyes were on Robert when he tasted one. I hoped that he'd remember I was *t r y i n g* . He seemed pleasantly surprised they turned out so well, especially for a first timer! I think they were pur-ty tasty, too. 8-)
Yes I must say they were just about perfect. For the first time doing it they were just like Moms. Sorry Mom!! With Love, Robert.

Way to go! - wish your blog had a taste and sniff option so we could experience them, too.
