We started our Timeline of Flight unit today. It didn't go exactly as planned (does it ever!). Even though we aren't covering avaition history in detail this mini unit will be very memorable.
My plan is to focus on main events, read a picture books about each, and build our own SIMPLE version.
I don't have the picture books in front of me now, but when I post the notebook page (a very simple, blah, timeline...nothing fancy) I'll try to include the books we read.
Today, we covered the Chinese & kites, the hot air balloon, and the blimp.
The first pictures are of kite crafts (these weren't for flying, but to hang from the ceiling).
Olivia running with the simple kite she made.
This is a basket for the hot air balloon. (a cut up OJ carton w/ red streamer wrapped around it.) Even w/ four helium balloons attached...it wouldn't get off the ground!
We tried eight balloons on an Easter basket (w/o the handle). It wouldn't get off the ground!
My plan was foiled.
I grabbed plastic cups and coffee filters. Those items only needed one balloon.
Yes, I know it's not really a hot air balloon, but more like a blimp.
Bad angle, but we have lift off. We were amazed that by removing about one inch of tape, the weight of the cup decreased enough to raise our balloon several feet. One tiny piece of tape made a huge difference.
The rest of the week, we will be working our way through the history of flight.
