Our first day of school was actually Monday the 17th, but I'm only now able to post.
Robert and I gave each of child a traditional German Schultuete filled with school supplies, stickers, craft items, and candy. No, I didn't spend time decorating the outside. Everything went inside. 8-)
This year we are trying a few new things. Going with the flow hasn't been working for my family. Mainly, not for me and my personality. After years of relaxed schooling, I have come to the realization that we better try something else better suited to us.
School-at-home? No.
Implementing a bit more structure and expectations? Yes.
SCHOOL CLOTHES -- I've considered a "school uniform" for quite some time. I was encourage to try them after reading the responses to the thread Dressing for School. However, waiting until mid September to shop forced a change of plans. The store didn't have khaki slacks, polo shirts, or even the color shirt they selected. I was just thankful to find three shirts the same color. We'll work on the pants later. They loved the red shirts instead of light blue. We have already been given a lot of positive feedback from inquisitive ;-) people while at mass, escrow, and the bank. I like that no one is looking for a favorite shirt (that's probably in the hamper). They all get dressed in a flash.
DAILY MASS -- Thankfully, Robert has Mondays off. He came with us to our first weekday mass. We hope to make it each day, but at the very least plan to attend each Monday. The only hesitation of going more is Teresa enjoys singing....nonstop. Her sounds are much more noticeable (distracting?) because the weekday Mass has about 20-30 people vs. Sunday Mass of 500+.
ALARM CLOCKS -- To be able to complete morning chores, eat breakfast together, and get out the house on time for 8:30 a.m. Mass an alarm clock is a necessity. They absolutely LOVE it!
A NAME -- Last, but not least, we have a school name! Unanimously, St. Michael's was chosen. No, it's not necessary to have a school name, but like the addition of school clothes this year, it has been a positive when dealing with questions.
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
